Bugge Wesseltoft is one of those musicians who thrives on spontaneous interaction, be it in the heyday of his own New Conception of Jazz, in duet with Sidsel Endresen or on albums such as Terje Rypdal's Vossabrygg (where the way he moderated the ebb and flow of the music contributed to the album's success) or works of his own such as OK World. Here a handpicked band of like-minded souls have piled into Bugge's Room in Oslo, and Nublu in New York. The results are a welcome return to the infectious rhythmic feel of New Conception (Reksjø and Bye were members of the New Conception back in the 1990s) with Truffaz and Ersahin on trumpet and tenor adding their contributions. It looks back to the early version of New Conception (which included trumpet and sax), while looking forward to see what special guests can bring to the table. The best moments here are very good, principally because of the New Conception groove, and while there are moments of lesser interest in a spontaneous outing such as this you sit tight and see where it all ends up.
