There's a neat synchronicity in Emergent's release coming alongside a slew of King Crimson reissues. There's a direct connection to Crimson through Edwin, be it his Porcupine Tree work alongside Fripp collaborator Theo Travis or his partnerships with Pat Mastelotto (Crimson's drummer). Edwin's bass work here often echoes Crimson's Tony Levin's, but there's also loose-limbed double-bass as well as stentorian electric bass. Durant's long sustains, his starbursts of Bartók-like assonance or his long-lined, often yearning themes also echo Frith's spirit, notably on the epic title track. But there's also an introspective intensity about Burnt Belief's instrumentals (seek in vain the escape key to the locked down ‘Turning Torso’) that is all their own. The ambient atmospherics aren't over-egged, providing just enough mystery to leave us wanting more, while there's a discipline in the clean production which keeps Emergent just the right side of prog indulgence.
