Not for nothing are Caixo Cubo regarded as one of the best electric jazz trios in Brazil, a country where competition is stiff – and where even the top new trios remain within genuflecting distance of long-reigning crazy samba kings Azymuth. And while these conservatoire-trained players acknowledge the inevitable influence of their heroes, there's not much that feels new in Angela, which is positioned as a dialogue between the electrified sounds of 1970s Brazil and contemporary beatmakers such as Yussef Kamaal, whose 2017 opus Black Focus paid homage to fusionists including Miles, Herbie and indeed, Azymuth.
Angela, then, is a twist on an already reinvented formula. While the opening title track, a brief improvisation, rolls out a hip-hop curveball with hard hitting drumming, vibrant keyboards and laidback bass, its potential isn't pursued. ‘Khanimambo’ is livelier, more textured, with Gomide tumbling into a downward modal melody but falling short with his solo; ‘Palavras’, the sole vocal track and the album highlight, finds Zé Leônidas singing intimately, Nascimento-style, as ohso-Brazilian melodies and harmonics float and shimmer. ‘Baião Malandro' by Egberto Gismonti comes parsed down but still funky, even if a version of Geri Allen's ‘Dark Prince’ feels like a sleep aid. Azymuth needn't move over just yet.
