British audiences will have noted George in a variety of settings, from the horn section of Jazz Jamaica to Nerija to Gary Crosby's Jazz Salon house band, and in each case the 28-year-old Londoner has proved an able improviser with a pleasingly flighty tone and lyrical phrasing. This debut unveils George the writer as well as player, and the result confirms a clear artistic maturity. Greatly influenced by the folklore as well as music to which she was exposed during her childhood in Nigeria, George has written several pieces based on the country's rich culture of storytelling, and the title track itself is an Ibibio word that denotes ‘journeys’. George uses high life rhythms to good effect, melding their breezy danceability to the kind of bustling swing she has played extensively in her career to date. As keen as she is to assert herself as an original composer, George also tests herself against two standards: the pop staple ‘The Night Has A Thousand Eyes’ and the more contemporary groove of Kenny Garrett's ‘Ms.Baja’, which sees George deliver some of her sharpest soloing as her excellent band, impressively anchored by the drums and bass of Koleoso and Casimir, comes into its own. Auspicious debut from a notable emerging figure in British jazz.
