This, remarkably, is album number 18 from the Jackson, Mississippi vocalist. And despite having paved the way for a whole generation of jazz vocalists seeking inspiration beyond the Great American Songbook – and picking up two Grammys, the Django D'Or, a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail and countless other awards en route – the singer shows no sign of resting on her laurels. Another Country, her first recording for the eOne label, is as fresh sounding, imaginative and emotionally engaging as her finest work for Blue Note. The album was recorded over ten days in Florence, and as evidenced by the two – entirely different – takes on the Neapolitan classic ‘O Sole Mio’, on one level it's a hymn to the beauty of Italian culture (Italian guitarist Fabrizio Sotti is both co-writer and co-producer). But then there's the utterly beguiling west African folk tale ‘Olomuroro’, sung beautifully by Wilson and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts Chamber Choir, the dovetailed percussion lines of the title track – great work here from Cinelu and Babalola – and Wilson's startling use of her upper voice on ‘Almost Twelve’, a song that continues a longstanding love affair with the music of Brazil. Stir in the dramatic tableaux of ‘Red Guitar’, ‘No More Blues’ and ‘Passion’, and it's clear that Wilson's multi-faceted storytelling gifts remain unsurpassed.
