Texas-born Cedar Walton enjoyed a most prolific recording career as both a sideman and soloist, though he is perhaps best known for his role with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers on almost a dozen landmark albums that included Mosaic, Three Blind Mice, Caravan, Ugetsu, Kyoto, Buhania's Delight, Free For All and Indestructible. A gifted hard pop pianist, he was also a well-above average composer. This set of seven performances comprises four of Walton's originals, plus a brace of standards minus the horns (‘For All We Know’ and ‘I Didn't Know What Time It Was’) and Stevie Wonder's ‘Another Star’. When Steve Turre and Manny Boyd step up to the microphone, there are moments that are redolent of the late Messengers. I doubt if any of Walton's admirers will be disappointed by this outing.
