Though he had been prominent on the LA scene since the late-1940s, it was as the original drummer with Gerry Mulligan's pianoless quartet that Chico Hamilton's profile as a drummer of great originality (especially his brushwork) came to the fore. After leaving Mulligan. Chico went on to lead numerous small groups that found great favour with the public. The combo that recorded El Chico is the real deal in that it highlights the exotic stylings of guitarist Gabor Szabo whereas, despite a first class line-up, Further Adventures frequently amounts to nothing more taxing than TV test card muzak. Surely one of Chico's other Impulse releases could have made this more appealing. OK it's one of the label's budget two-LPs-on-one CD, but there's a downside and one I've previously aired. It's all very well reissuing them with reduced copies of the original sleeves. But one requires a high-powered magnifying glass to read both the sleeve notes and credits.
