Paying tribute to some of the grande dames of blues and soul, from the opening ‘Resolution Blues’ vocalist China Moses invests everything she sings on Crazy Blues with a singular emotion. Moses grabs the classic 1930s blues ‘Why Don’t You Do Right' (a hit for Lil Green) by the lapels and takes it for a spin around the dance floor, while the title track - sung and recorded by the great Mamie Smith – packs a knockout punch. Dramatic, heartfelt and with a strong sense of humour never too far from the surface, whether it's Nina Simone's ‘Work Song’, Donna Summer's ‘Hot Stuff’ or Dinah Washington's version of ‘You’re Crying' (heard here with strings), Moses once again shows her knack of adding a personal twist to classic material. As on This One's For Dinah, the 12-track disc features stylish arrangements by pianist Raphaël Lemonnier and horn charts by trumpeter François Biensan.
