On this, her sixth album, New York-based vocalist Chris McNulty invests every bar with real jazz phrasing and a moving sensitivity to the melodic line. Whether wrapping around the utterly lovely melodic line of Horace Silver's ‘Lonely Woman’ or making you fall in love again with ‘On The Street Where You Live’, the singer's storytelling gift has you hanging on every phrase. She also contributes a brace of songs – the first, the hauntingly beautiful ‘Letter To Marta’, was written in her teens and possesses an almost hymn-like simplicity. The second, ‘Long Road Home – The Song That Sings You Here’, features jazz singing of the very highest order. McNulty has never sounded more at ease with her artistry. The singer enjoys fine accompaniment – ‘Jitterbug Waltz’ lights up with apposite contributions from guitarist Paul Bollenback and tenorist Igor Butman, while the rhythm section of bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Marcus Gilmore are the epitome of subtlety. Now could some kind soul set her up with a bunch of UK gigs, please?
