This is David Helbock's third album for ACT, an association that got off to a flying start with Into the Mystic. It suggested a pianist of considerable potential was on the starting blocks, someone to watch out for in the highly competitive European jazz scene. If the album had faults it was that, rather than focusing on perfecting a core repertoire of eight to 10 songs, he spread himself a little thinly by cramming 14 titles onto the album, with some performances lacking depth. With Playing John Williams, a solo album, it's impossible not to think he is spreading himself a little thinly again; his second album Tour d'Horizon abandoned his trio, shooting off in a new direction with saxophones, clarinets, tuba, trumpet and electronics and was a bit of a disappointment. Now we have a solo piano outing of John Williams' orchestral themes from Star Wars to Jaws, and from Jurassic Park to Harry Potter. Rather like being set loose in Willie Wonka's chocolate factory, jumping from strawberry truffle to coffee cream to Turkish delight, David Helbock on ACT is a bit of a puzzle. What exactly is he trying to say? In the case of jazz solo piano, it's not simply sitting at the keyboard and playing a few tunes without accompaniment. It's a demanding art in its own right and this album falls short Perhaps by first establishing his voice within a trio context -where he certainly has shown potential - we might get a sense of this musician's emotional depth and commitment.
