Here's a treasure from the vault. Coffey's time as a Funk Brother is legendary: that's him funk'n'freaking out on The Temptations' extraordinary ‘Ball of Confusion’ and blistering behind Edwin Starr's ‘War’. This live session is rich with a Detroit soul-jazz vibe, ramped up by Coffey's fascination with tech. Coffey was an early adopter of Echoplex, wah-wah, and, spectacularly, Fuzz-Tone, amply illustrated by the opening cut here, called, er, ‘Fuzz’. The set segues seamlessly between soul, pop and jazz with nary a missed beat. It's no surprise to hear an extended jam on ‘The Look of Love’ morphing into Herbie's ‘Maiden Voyage’. The CD's complemented by a set of interviews with various protagonists summoning the Motor City spirit in what now seems a golden age where musical exploration and the dancefloor joined seamlessly. But, ah, where's the tape of when James Jamerson sat in with the trio. What wonders would that hold?
