Berlin-based drummer Diego Pinera, who hails from Montevideo, Uruguay, says he studied music in places where it came from – his home town Havana, Boston (Berklee) and Leipzig. Rhythmic complexity is his thing, as he showed on his 2018 ACT debut as a leader, Despertando. He takes things a stage further on Odd Wisdom with an ‘A List’ of New York City musicians – Donny McCaslin, Ben Monder and Scott Colley – saying he brings together all the sounds and rhythms he has been working on for the past 10 years.

Be that as it may, this session boils down to a theme-solos-theme session, with a couple of transitions thrown in for good measure. This immediately lends an air of predictability to the proceedings that the technical nous of Pinera's American colleagues cannot conceal.

Rhythm should be felt, rather than an acrostic to be navigated with care since its complexities have the effect of hemming in the soloists. Nothing flows in this episodic music of fits and starts, and five minutes of Pinera communing with himself on ‘Conversations With Myself’ allows the senses to wander. ‘Clave Tune’, and ‘Domingo’ that open the album promise little which is largely fulfilled with ‘De Madrugada’ and ‘Easter in Puglia’. Jazz might mean many things to many people, but boring shouldn't be one of them.
