Egberto Gismonti is the Brazilian guitar and piano virtuoso whose oeuvre – like that of his predecessor, Heitor Villa-Lobos – embraces both classical music and his country's folk traditions, and whose ECM collaborations have included the likes of Jan Garbarek and Charlie Haden. Commissioned by Resonance boss George Klabin, a longtime friend and fan, this tribute sees acclaimed clarinettist Daniels leading a precise, deftly chosen rhythm-section and a string quartet that plucks, bows and swings. The music, all of it written in the 1970s and 1980s, is as airy and melodious as it is intricate and textured, with Daniels translating original Portuguese-language vocals into a musical argot that indeed seems to speak. ‘Tango Bossa’, the album's only original, comes courtesy of a vindicated Daniels. “Many thanks to all for recreating the magic of these songs with their Brazilian roots to successfully become new musical pieces,” states Gismonti on the sleeve. Brazilian culture has always been the basic source that drives the latter's music; it does here too, to memorable effect.
