When music-making sounds as flowing, effortless and simpatico as this, you know you’re in the hands of masters. Eliane Elias grew up with the music of Chet Baker so it’s no exaggeration to say that this tribute album has been years in the making. Singing music associated with Baker from the Great American Songbook, the results are outstanding. If the whirlwind adrenaline rush of ‘Just In Time’ leaves you breathless, the seductively slow tempo of ‘Embraceable You’ gives a welcome nod back to her previous release, Light My Fire. The palpable sense of musical space so characteristic of the very best Brazilian music is ever-present. The sparkling arrangement of ‘There Will Never Be Another You’ presents a real coup de théâtre, vibrating between Brazilian rhythms and a hard-hitting, straight-ahead jazz feel. The sign-off, Elias’s solo piano/vocal interpretation of ‘I Get Along Without You Very Well’, is heartbreaking.
