The misty, mysterioso atmosphere with which this album starts says much about the Emile Parisien quartet’s evocative ability. A similar range of colour and ambience is heard on much of what is a consistent piece of work. The French soprano saxophonist has been nothing if not eclectic in his career and it comes as no surprise that his well marshaled quartet slides into dance music territory on occasion and also drifts into sultry, skulking electro-acoustic waters anchored by the whiplash effects of Julien Loutelier’s drums.
Some of the material is Shorteresque in terms of its compositional character rather than Parisien’s horn sound, which leans more to Steve Lacy. But there is sufficient strength of character in the mesh of organic and synthetic timbres to make this an interesting and engaging listen, and the wily use of technology throughout suggests that things might well go to another creative level on stage.
