It may be rather premature to call Eyolf Dale's trio a ‘supergroup’, but bassist Per Zannusi and drummer Audun Kleive are both widely regarded as among the finest Norway has to offer on their respective instruments. Dale has referred to them as his “heroes” as he has quietly, but surely, been building an international reputation.
Although he has extensively toured with his Wolf Valley octet, and in duo with Daniel Herkskedal, he showed with this trio's 2020 album Being (Edition) that in both conception and execution, the trio was the ideal format for his very personal, sometimes rhapsodic, sometimes edgy piano style. The Wayfarers displays subtle yet sure signs of artistic growth, not only in centring Dale's approach to the trio, but refining his playing to suit context. As a trio, both learned and intuitive interaction, it is heading towards the ultimate goal of trio expression where the totality of their joint endeavour is greater than the sum of its constituent parts – the way they combine with each other's playing bring qualities to the fore which, away from the trio context, are much less visible.
The result is literally and metaphorically summed up in track three, ‘Hidden Treasures,’ where elements of each others playing coalesce in a way that contributes not only to an excellent album, but revealing of the promise of things yet to come.
