An important figure in European jazz since the 1960s, Ambosetti was a founding member (and later associate director) of fellow Swiss George Gruntz's Concert Band. In 1979, he began recording with the Enja label, remaining loyal ever since. He has played and recorded with a remarkable who's who of American and European jazz and now, “At my young age of 82,” he has ticked another item off on his bucket list, by recording his third album with strings: “The first one was with Don Sebesky in the 1970s. I've wanted to do another album with strings, as the more you age, the more you focus on ballads.”

Arranged and conducted by Alan Broadbent, Ambrosetti is a master of making every note count. Even on the title track, on which he does not play but hands over the solo space to violinist and concertmaster Sarah Caswell, this is an album where the right people do the right things at the right time.

There are songs which inspired the young, up and coming trumpeter such as ‘Portrait of Jeannie,’ that appeared on the 1955 Clifford Brown album with strings. Others chosen for the sheer integrity of the melody, such as ‘Soul Eyes,’ ‘When the Sun Never Sets” and Charlie Haden's ‘Nightfall’ that Ambrosetti effortlessly crafts into performances whose elegance and craftsmanship might by some be easily taken for granted have a depth and profundity that endures.
