The label is Cannon’s own as is the band, brought together by him for this one-off booking to pay tribute to Elvin Jones and Tyner, for both of whom he worked regularly.

‘EJ’s Blues’ opens with a shout chorus, the ensemble clamorous and agitated, before Lovano scrambles in and Henderson follows, brittle at first but interesting, Cannon playing time and Turre losing his thread. Kikoski is triumphant, as he remains throughout and White’s snare accents hinder rather than help. Cannon’s ‘Three Elders’, dedicated to Jones, Tyner and pianist Larry Willis, is easier to enjoy with Henderson’s lovely solo entry, tightly-muted and Miles-ian, Lovano maintaining the elegiac mood, the others sitting out and White shushing his cymbals, before Henderson-re-enters to finish over Cannon’s arco bass.

There’s a similar outcome with Tyner’s fine ‘Search For Peace’, Henderson and Lovano alternating in pleasingly moderate fashion. ‘Home’ also by Tyner is looser again, Turre fully himself and together, Kikoski quite superb, while ‘Blues In The Minor’ another Tyner piece, has a White solo that passes the time, Irby urgent and to the point. ‘Contemporary Focus’ has Lovano straining over Cannon’s impeccable line and Henderson’s best showing on the album, his solo, if fragile at times, quite uplifting. The more restrained the outcome the better on this evidence but a noble idea in principle. Four stars for Kikoski; three for the rest.
