Snarky Puppy alumni Searight and Werth finally follow up 2018’s riotous Swagism with another big-noised funk excursion, this time stacked with a roster of super star guests. It all kicks off with the JB’s tribute ‘JB’s Out!’ although how much shouting of ‘I feel good!’, ‘Oh, yeah!’ and ‘Take me to the bridge’ really contributes to party funk is questionable. Of the guests, Eric Gales, wearer of the blues crown, adds some needed edge to the elongated jam, ‘Grandma’s Curtains’. There’s a brief vox here and elsewhere which also marks out Mustard n’Onions as different from its predecessor. Marcus Miller is, of course, immaculate on ‘Yellow Dan’, not a judo reference, but a curious melange of Steely Dan meets the Yellowjackets, which reflects Searight and Dan’s greed for anything with a funk resonance to it. But amid the mayhem it’s Danny Wytanis’ measured trombone that steals the show on ‘Where’s Danny?’. If breathless (not necessarily breathtaking) stunt funk is your thing, then enquire within. Don’t get too excited about featuring Bernard Wright’s last recordings. Though welcome, they are brief.
