This a fine record and proof if needed of the awesome fire-power of this remarkable ensemble. GIO's unusual make up sets it aside from other similar ventures such as the Instabile or Misha Mengelberg's Instant Composers Pool. Less brass-driven certainly but also allows for a wider variety of softer textures through its strings and woodwinds. Earlier CDs on Emanem and FMR did much more than hint at this versatility of soundscape. However, here, George Burt's use of form and structure adds a fresh dimension to the orchestra's work. There are echoes here of Barry Guy's collaboration with GIO and Guy is the ghost at this particular feast. Burt's methods draw upon Guy's in creating an architecture for the composition that allows a maximum freedom for improvisers such as Evan Parker, Lol Coxhill and the excellent Raymond MacDonald while providing coherence and direction. Within that overall shape beautiful fluttering Messiaen-like passages are bracketed by explosive climactic outbursts. This is music of at times quite astonishingly beautiful textures, shimmering and translucent. Flower of Scotland, indeed!
