You can practically smell the mischief emanating from this third duo release by two of the Netherlands’ most puckish improvisers. Despite their very different origins and backgrounds – Bennink helping to invent European free-improv in the 1960s, and Ex coming up as part of punk outfit The Ex, at the tail end of the 1970s – they’ve now been playing together for nearly 30 years and have forged a highly developed and sensitively attuned shared language.
Ex makes a virtue of his avowedly unschooled approach: not so much playing the guitar as rudely manipulating the strings with drumsticks, metal files and palms of the hands, generating a compendium of taut scrabbles and ragged abstractions. It’s clearly all gravy for the ever-restless Bennink, who gleefully avoids the obvious, tumbling around the kit as though discovering it for the first time, occasionally suggesting a rhythmic hint through absent-minded rim-shots or a tom heartbeat.
When they suddenly crash together in a thrillingly abrupt dead stop, the hidden logic in these anarchic spontaneous compositions reveals itself with a grin.
