Although Hiromi's released numerous albums, they’ve nearly all been discrete pieces of work; solo, duets (with mentor Corea) or with various band line-ups. So it's cheering to find a tad of consistency in that this is the same trio that graced Voice. Having toured with Jackson and Phillips (as documented in her current DVD release, reviewed on page 60), Move benefits from the intimacy that has grown between them. The music remains frenetic and at times bombastic, but few musicians remain as graceful while tearing along at breakneck speeds as Jackson and Philips. Hiromi has at last found peers with whom she can make (slightly) mellower, more accessible music.
Move is a kind of concept album, reflecting a day in the life of Hiromi. And boy does she start the day with a loud alarm clock, if the title track's anything to go by. In between the manicness, there's a little more air than usual, while ‘Margarita’ is downright swinging, a cocktail hour jollity that has shades of Peterson about it, and ‘11.49pm’ also breaks down nicely into single handed runs. Maybe the next album will explore the wee small hours of the morning and we might yet hear Hiromi at a pace and volume of a more peaceable nature.
