Anyone who had the pleasure of hearing the captivating set by the great Carmen Lundy at last year's ReVoice! Festival can't fail to have been impressed by the amazing feel and grooving pocket of drummer Jamison Ross. Hearing this self-titled debut album by the winner of the 2012 Thelonious Monk International Jazz competition only serves to increase your admiration. It reveals Ross to be not only a supremely gifted drummer, but also a composer, arranger and singer of the highest order. Contributing vocals on 10 of the album's 12 tracks, the impressively varied repertoire ranges from the Muddy Waters leadoff song ‘Deep Down in Florida’ to the understated lyricism of the Eddie Harris/Les McCann hit ‘Set Us Free’ and a joyous soul-jazz reimagining of ‘My One and Only Love’. Ross also pays fulsome homage to Lundy with a terrific version of ‘These Things You Are To Me’ (from her 1994 album Self Portrait), while of the self-penned compositions, the pulsing heartbeat of ‘Emotions’ is a standout.
