Jason Miles’ curriculum vitae precedes him. It's quite remarkable: he did the synth programming (uncredited) for Miles Davis on Tutu and Siesta, was musical director for Luther Vandross, has worked with stars such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, and Diana Ross… and we’re only just getting started.

In 2000 he began arranging, producing and recording a series of tribute albums, beginning with Celebrating the Music of Weather Report, and subsequently honouring names like Brazilian pianist/composer Ivan Lins and Grover Washington Jr. So, in 2005, it was perhaps inevitable he would turn to Mr Davis with Miles to Miles: In the Spirit of Miles Davis. It was a project close to his heart, and he returned to the Miles theme in 2015, 2017 and 2020. On this latest one, Miles to Miles, the trumpeter is only evoked in ‘Flamenco Sketches’, which is modernised with electronic tone colours, and is a vibrant, well- produced and executed (a hallmark of his albums) tribute.

More than that, it offers eminently listenable originals – such as ‘King of Bling,’ ‘Butter Pecan’ and ‘Street Vibe’, which have a freshness that banishes any notion of squeezing the last drop of nectar from Miles’ legacy. These songs work well as both as grooving background music and engaging, contemporary foreground music.
