Known as ‘Singapore's King of Swing’, Jeremy Monteiro brought top New Yorkers Anderson and Nash out to his hometown in 2018 and this stirring recital was the result. On this evidence, Monteiro certainly knows how to hold and entrance a club audience, deploying the trio cleverly, his own playing style a cocktail made up of equal parts of Alexander and Peterson but with a dash of his own magic. I think he's used to being centre stage, an entertainer with technique aplenty, happy to structure his sets so that any chance of audience indifference is stemmed. You could call his approach ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ for there are surprises on all nine tracks.
Clearly a crowd-pleaser, he opens with Brubeck's ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’, first toying with the melody and then altering the dynamics of the piece quite drastically, while chording strongly [a Brubeck habit] over this 12-minute examination, Anderson soloing at length as Nash struts.
‘Just in Time’ has a different feel, nimble, stop-starting at first, Anderson carrying the tune, as the trio then moves into an explosive deconstruction, all rippling runs and thunderous keyboard surges. ‘Prelude to a Kiss’ is calmer and happily, ‘Josefina’ for his wife is also more placid, Anderson eloquent in his restraint while ‘Mount Olive’ is funky in Silver fashion. I didn’t know Monteiro before; I’m glad I do now.
