Jeremy Rose made sure he was earmarked as talent to watch with 2015's Wire in the Blood, not only as a soloist, but as a composer, arranger and conceptualist. He is now one of the leading lights on the Oz jazz scene, seeking out challenging surroundings to test himself, excelling with the trio Vazesh, for example, with just tar (a long-necked lute primarily associated with Azerbaijan) and double bass accompaniment. In what is probably his most challenging assignment so far, Disruption! The Voice of the Drums takes us into the world of shaman drum music from South Korea. The drums are foregrounded, the instrumental accompaniment skeletal, and despite the liner notes’ peroration of these drummers: Simon Barker (“arguably one of the world's greatest drummers”) and Chloe Kim's “great energy in performance,” this is one of those projects that would no doubt be stimulating live, as rhythm moves something primal in us all, but in truth when bottled for a recording and then replayed, rather than stimulate the senses, it pummels them into submission; as Dr Johnson once said of Paradise Lost, no one ever wished it longer.
