German-born drummer Jochen Rueckert, who moved to New York in 1995, splits his time between rock and jazz and includes Chris Cheek, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Pat Metheny among his credits. Now very much the downtown native, he has a great sound and a springy rattle-and-clack pulse that cushions and impels in equal measure. And, as you'd expect from an all-original set led from the drums, there is a sprinkling of well-worked drum solos to confirm his technical flair. But really, this album is best seen as a showcase for a tight, contemporary no-frills mainstream band relaxed in each other's company and stretching out over dense modern harmonies and solid rhythms, anchored by Matt Penman's super-firm bass. Mark Turner's airy tone has rarely been as focused as it is here, negotiating the thickets of harmony that Lage Lund conjures on guitar. And they sound great together. Both have roots in 1950s New York cool – Turner's liking for Warne Marsh is well documented, and Lage Lund has more than a trace of Jim Hall and Billy Bauer – but resonate with contemporary concerns.
