Joe Morris has been name checked alongside Sonny Sharrock as one of America's leading guitar improvisers. His latest recording (this time as part of a trio) is partly inspired by the early Cecil Taylor Unit recordings that were made with Taylor on piano, Jimmy Lyons on alto saxophone and/or Sunny Murray/Andrew Cyrille on drums. While Morris admits that the music on Colorfield does not strictly adhere to the CTU's methodology structure, the music here is certainly in the spirit of Taylor's titanic trio. Steve Lantner's complex keyboard patterns suggest Taylor's deep influence, while Gray's skittering drum kit is close to Murray's style –but never so close that you could accuse him of imitation. Morris takes on the role of Lyons’ alto with his guitar (a similar creative stance to Sharrock, whose guitar playing mirrored that of his jazz hero John Coltrane), producing intricate melodic patterns from his instrument that seem to flow from his fingers in a slipstream of improvisation.
