An important album in John McLaughlin's discography, Live in San Francisco is taken from his farewell tour of the US last year, prior to moving into well earned semi-retirement in Monaco. Jimmy Herring's (an excellent guitarist) band opened for McLaughlin's 4th Dimension on the tour, and then joined them for the final set to revisit the spirit of the first (and most memorable) incarnation of the Mahavishnu Orchestra that turned the jazz and rock worlds on their collective ears in the early 1970s. Using compositions from the albums Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, Between Nothingness & Eternity/Visions of the Emerald Beyond, this album comprises the final set with both bands at the Warfield in San Francisco on 8 December 2017. Wonder of wonders, their combined power captures the spirit of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra, with McLaughlin making the hairs on the back of your neck well and truly stand to attention. Comparisons between then and now miss the point, it's clear McLaughlin wanted to exit the international touring circuit with a bang, leaving his audience wanting more, and he succeeded.
