This is the second album by the Julia Hülsmann Quartet. Their first together, Not Far From Here from 2019, suggested Hülsmann had found the ideal vehicle not just to frame her piano and compositional talent, but that of Mullbauer, Köbberling and Kempendorf. In short, an ensemble in almost perfect balance, yet showing potential for artistic growth. Regular performances together has helped shape a group sound and identity that is greater than the sum of the individual performers. Hülsmann, wrote five of the 12 compositions – 11 originals plus ‘Sometimes It Snows In April’ by Prince – that demonstrate what a sophisticated composer she has become. Her compositions form the backbone of this album, while Mullbauer, Köbberling and Kempendorf (and Prince) contribute the balance.

Soloists emerge organically from the evolving nature of these compositions in a way that blurs the distinction between the written and improvised, while respecting the composer's intent by maintaining the mood and emotional climate of each song.

Uli Kempendorff has refined an approach to tenor saxophone that sounds closer to Atlantic period Lee Konitz than traditional exemplars of the instrument, his compelling inventions an important element in making this album the success it is.

Hülsmann's ingenious writing often links her left-hand lines to Muellbauer's bass, a subtle touch that tightens the sense of ensemble cohesion, while Muellbauer is totally in synch with Köbberling's subtle colouristic washes (there is thought, empathy and creativity in the way they jointly lift each composition); for example, ‘Polychrome’ has a series of neatly executed phrases that seem to progress in a series of sighs. This is music that pushes forward in sophisticated, subtle but always with creative ingenuity.
