Colorado-born, New York-based Warren clearly has a lot more going for him than his distinguished initials. As well as indulging in ‘folk-jazz’ songwriting and the oompahs of Slavic Soul Party, he is an adept of what one might call ‘straightahead post-free jazz’. His relatively conventional trumpet tone is capable of much flexibility, from lyricism to exhortation, and his six original compositions reveal considerable variety. This recorded debut of an apparently longstanding quartet has everything quite structured, sometimes with repeated figures backing the improvised contributions, but these are compelling rather than simplifying. Schlegelmilch, who has been known to do electric keyboards elsewhere, is all acoustic here and can be lyrical or busy as required; even the ballad section of ‘Iranosaurus Rex’ doesn't indicate a lack of energy. And, while functioning for the most part as a rhythm team, the urgency of Garabedian and comparative veteran Takeishi ensure that interest is maintained throughout these 45 minutes.
