Writing in the sleeve booklet, guitarist Eubanks explains that on this date he wanted to broaden out from a narrow jazz sound and move into “other things I’ve been musically exposed to.” In practical terms that translates in to laid-back originals involving funky, folksy rhythms and gentle wah-wah guitar lines delivered with plenty of spaces in between. According to your mood, the overall result is pleasantly soothing or crashingly boring.
With cohorts including two of his brothers and ex-Jazz Messengers tenorman Bill Pierce on hand you'd expect occasional sparks to fly, but hard as they try, the mood remains resolutely mellow – even during a funked-up version of ‘Resolution’, the miniature modal masterpiece from A Love Supreme. Among those noodling in the background here is Take 6 vocalist Alvin Chea, making like an electric bass.
Occasionally the leader whips up a genuine head of steam, yet even then everyone around him continues to act super-cool. Close your eyes and you could be watching some hip cops-and-robbers TV show with the versatile Mr Eubanks’ name on the music credits.
