Norwegian saxophonist Kjetil Møster has, over the last few years, lurked most conspicuously in heavily prog-infested waters, whether with Hungarian avant-rock power trio JÜ or his own eponymous quartet. Here, however, teamed with three of Chicago’s finest, he backs away from the somewhat predictable King Crimson-style riffage he’s dealt in the past, and eases cautiously into much less quantifiable situations. Taken as a whole, the five tracks on this session offer a pretty convincing demonstration of divergent improvising strategies – from the bullish, free-jazz momentum of ‘Orko’ to the wafting, alien landscape of ‘Anicca’, with its weird, percolating guitar effects from Jeff Parker and thick arco bass scrapes from Joshua Abrams, seen without his guimbri for a change. The final piece, ‘Pajama Jazz’, crawls along with a clunking, clockwork rhythm courtesy of ex-Tortoise drummer John Herndon, giving Møster all the room he needs to weave narcotised soliloquies. In all, it’s a very satisfying session from some major talents.
