Despite his widespread influence continuing since his death in 1978, Tristano as a performer more or less isolated himself in his last two decades. So it's fitting that this last, home-studio recording (followed only by a few live items) sees him ploughing a lone furrow in totally uncompromising manner. The steely-toned right hand plays either single-note lines, of considerable rhythmic complexity, or dense but mobile chord-structures, while the left is stiffly metronomic, often in 4-to-the-bar bass lines. Barry Ulanov's notes (virtually illegible as reproduced here) imply that all except 12 minutes were from a single session, but don't attempt to relate individual tracks to their chord-sequences. Only ‘You Don't Know What Love Is’ retains its title and a version of its melody, yet all the improvised ‘originals’ are clearly based on standards. Fortunately for those interested, Eumni Shim's book Lennie Tristano: His Life In Music not only identifies them all, but devotes a whole 10 pages to a partial transcription of the famous ‘C Minor Complex’.
