The focus of much of the 37-year-old New Jersey-born cutting edge contemporary drummer Mark Guiliana's work for most of this decade has been on his Beat Music, a CD production company that looks to place ‘real time’ electronica in a live ensemble setting. The 2014 album Beat Music: Los Angeles Improvisations that featured Tim LeFebvre was the standout for those with a jazz leaning, as was Mehliana, his nu-prog duo collaboration with Brad Mehldau. A year later though Guiliana was reconnecting to the acoustic jazz setting that highlighted his earliest work, including a long stint with double-bassist Avishai Cohen's band as well as pianist Jason Lindner's Now vs Now. His first acoustic quartet recording Family First was issued in 2015 and the second Jersey, also released on Motéma Music, has seen a change of pianist, the Cuban-born Fabian Almazan (who toured with the band to promote Family First) replacing fellow ex-Avishai sideman Shai Maestro. Most originals are by Guiliana and the influence of grunge is in evidence as well as latin/Mediterranean folklore partly drawn from his previous association with Cohen and the NYC Smalls Jazz club scene. The emphasis of the compositions is on minimal alt. rock-like songs but with Guiliana's energetically imaginative drums and engaging solos by the wily saxophonist Chris Morrissey and pianist Fabian Almazan. One of the CD highlights though is the only cover, an understated instrumental version of David Bowie's ballad ‘Where Are We Now?’ from 2013's The Next Day, reworked as an acoustic lullaby, with a ‘thank you David Bowie’ from Guiliana's toddler right at the end. It feels heartfelt, though; Guiliana featured in the Donny McCaslin quartet that played on Bowie's final farewell album Blackstar and, as a result, it's one of the better posthumous Bowie tributes around.
