Stockhausen, the son of the pioneering electronics composer, has not released on ECM in a decade and a half. Weber, who has previously worked with the likes of Lee Konitz, by contrast makes his ECM debut here. Although this is their first recording, the duo has been in existence for six years, and the pair also played together in Stockhausen’s group, Eternal Voyage. Opener ‘What Can I Do For You?’, which finds Stockhausen strumming the piano strings, is apparently a tribute to his teacher, the late John Taylor. That Taylor apparently began each lesson with this question was, to Stockhausen, a way of saying: “I don’t have anything to say, except in combination with whatever you would like to do.” That same spirit of exchange and collaboration is very much evident here, as are echoes of Taylor’s magnificent playing. It is, however, very much a new sound: the best way to pay tribute to a musician like Taylor, after all, is to continue to innovate.
