It hardly seems like 23 years since the demise of Petrucciani, since the uncommon bone-disease that destined him to a short life never diminished his impact on the scene.

The admiration granted by his numerous international colleagues guaranteed that his musical gifts would leave a lasting mark. Here, you don’t get to hear him interacting with American or European equals, but you do have a lovely 55-minute recital delivered to a church audience as part of a festival in Jutland. In a programme including three originals, along with several standards including an encore medley, there’s ample evidence of his technical ability but also his sensitivity and avoidance of relying on technique. His sense of humour allows the inclusion, during a loosely lyrical rendition of ‘Round Midnight’, of a sneaky quotation from ‘The Windmills Of Your Mind’. There’s also the occasional hint of other players (such as the brief allusions to McCoy Tyner and boogie-woogie in ‘Blue Monk’), but mostly he comes across like Michel and sounds as if he’s enjoying it.
