Listen to Mo Foster and you are listening to 60 years of British popular music. Has anyone played bass in more contexts than ‘The Legend’? And with Friends you are joining with Foster's role as the most listening bass in Brit jazz, who puts his playing at the services of the song, not his ego. Which might explain why it's taken seven decades in the biz for Mo Foster to make this, his debut as leader.
What leadership means here is that Foster has carte blanche to choose music made by his heroes, notably Gil Evans, Mike Gibbs, Jaco Pastorius and Steve Swallow. And although these are personal choices, (even going back to Foster's Affinity days with ‘Who's There’) these are also songs, like Gibbs' ‘Some Echoes’ or ‘On the Third Day’ that a new generation of listeners, less tribal, more open minded and ever embracing of difference cut their teeth upon. So, In Concert is no exercise in nostalgia: it's 60 years of music distilled. Here's to the next 60.
