Two African saxophonists, the legendary Cameroonian on tenor and the young Mozambican on alto, do a dance of the generations in the unaccompanied duo opener, ‘Blues For Africa’, bookended by studio laughter and chat. With Dibango switching to vibes, ‘Take Five’ gets the ‘Soul Makossa’ makeover, while Dibango's most famous tune gets its own leaden outing later in the album with processed beats and vocals. In between there are Afro-funk treatments of everything from Marcus Miller's ‘Tutu’ to Sigmund Romberg's ‘Softly As In A Morning Sunrise’. Duke Ellington's ‘In A Sentimental Mood’ features Chonguiça playing what sounds a little like an Eddie Harris-style electric sax. According to the publicity, this album was “five years in the making” which, together with some overproduction in places, clearly hasn't helped the overall cohesion of what is ultimately a rather thin listen. The best bit, it turns out, is that simple saxophone duet at the start.
