As with Ella, Tatum, and Getz, Norman Granz transformed Oscar Peterson into a successful worldwide brand to the point where they all built us a most loyal fan base. It's estimated that both as a front man and a ubiquitous sideman, Peterson's name is on approximately 500 albums. Possibly more. Whereas, like Brubeck's Time Out, Miles' Kind Of Blue and Getz's Jazz Samba, then the Ducal enriched Night Train is the one Peterson album to be found in most collections, perhaps it's due to it being much less frenetic than so many of his other albums. For your delectation Live In Amsterdam is a previously unreleased concert recording, while Bursting Out and the Ray Brown collection are both masterminded by arranger Ernie Wilkins to where they called upon the participation of Cannonball Adderley and almost the same section players to produce an exhilarating heavily echoed brassy widescreen cinematic canvas as evident on the opener ‘Blues For Big Scotia’. All that seems to be missing is Steve McQueen, a fast sports car and a couple of even faster females! [that's enough, Ed] For someone who appeared to spend most of his waking hours recording, Peterson cut only one official album in 1960 (Fiorello!), so this new-to-you Amsterdam concert fills in a gap. Closely miked in pristine sound, all eight selections are familiar crowd pleasers – all thrillers, no fillers – such as ‘Cubano Chant’, ‘Con Alma’, ‘Woody ‘N’ You' and ‘The Maids Of Cadiz’. As to be expected, once powered up, Peterson never eases up until the plug is pulled.
