Mare Nostrum (literally, ‘Our Sea’) is the latin for the Mediterranean. It’s also the name of a powerful European supercomputer – as well as being the moniker of a scarcely less powerful jazz supergroup comprising diverse European talents. This nominal coincidence could give rise to a comparison of the compositional and improvisational capacities of AI versus those of experienced flesh-and-blood musicians. But why bother when you can listen to the third release from French accordionist Richard Galliano, Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu and Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren instead? Albums I and II were recorded in Italy and France, so it was the turn of Sweden to host the sessions for Mare Nostrum III. Comprising 15 economical cuts, most of them originals, but with the likes of Michel Legrand’s ‘The Windmills Of Your Mind’ and Quincy Jones’s ‘Love Theme From The Getaway’ thrown in for good measure, it’s the sound of a very harmonious and nostalgically fragrant European union.
