In the past few years the Canadian label We Are Busy Bodies has staked a strong claim to be a key curator of classic South African jazz, and this latest excellent release only strengthens that further. In fact, what is emerging from the reissue programme is a more complete picture of the country’s improvising talent and pianist Pat Matshikiza and saxophonist Kippie Moketsi certainly deserve wider exposure outside specialist circles. Tshona! belongs next to the mid-1970s jewels of Abdullah Ibrahim and Winston Mankunku insofar as it has the irresistible strolling quality, the slightly behind the beat saunter that defines township jazz in which mellow dance rhythms gel beautifully with impassioned solos, particularly from the rightly revered Moketsi. The two sides of the vinyl are split between Matshikiza’s tunes, the most impressive of which is the title track, and Moketsi’s. And he produces an absolute charmer in the shape of the swinging ‘Kippie’s Prayer.’ A welcome spotlight on historic sounds.
