Urbane, relaxed, yet bristling with intent, Travel Sketches is all you'd expect from a Booth release: immaculate playing, a feel for Coltrane's ballad phrasing, and a band of friends who can summon a sound at once intimate yet never laissez faire. As you may surmise from the title, these are tunes inspired by Booth's worldwide travels. So ‘Seattle Falls’ is a sophisticated take on a rainy afternoon (are there any others?) in, you guessed, Seattle. ‘Seminole Serenade’ is a gentle meditation part inspired by Booth's native American fiancé, while, altogether more energetic in its boppish briskness, ‘Medina Scuffle’, highlighted by Hamiliton's breezy chords, reflects a mildly chaotic Moroccan experience. You could argue that there isn't much mood variation across the set, Booth is annoyingly happy about his visits and even coming home is a chilled affair, celebrated by ‘No Place Like Home’. ‘Tuscan Charm’ is, well, charming, and ‘Byron Bay’ is about the joys of ‘switching off’. But in a world increasingly insular in outlook, why not join with Booth's sense of wonder and peace.
