This overlooked debut from 1990s Belgian guitars -and-drum trio Rawfrücht turns out to be a hidden gem. Climb aboard the opening funk-driven and fruitily-titled ‘Cunnilingus et Langoustines' and you're instantly transported into a realm of other-worldly themes and musical diversions that are pleasingly unexpected, joyful and thought provoking.

Guitarists Hughes Warin and Teuk Henri take elements from sources such as jazz classics, indie and krautrock, together with classical, improv and noise to form a finely tuned amalgam of styles that fit seamlessly together. Their action is matched by Thomas Van Cottom's equally informed drumming technique – adding the necessary percussive bark to accompany his fellow band mates' electric bite.

What makes Rawfrücht's music special is the way they charge down one musical corridor, only to immediately change direction and adventurously push their way through a thorned maze of improvisational possibilities – all of which are fascinating and attention grabbing as their instruments morph into altered sonic shapes.

Although a further album (with added bass player François Verrue) was recorded in 2000, it appears that Rawfrücht did not survive, more reason then that their astonishing eponymously titled starter should not be ignored this time round.
