On Everything All Of The Time: Kid A Revisited, London-based pianist Rick Simpson (a member of bassist Michael Janisch's band among others) reworks Radiohead's classic album for acoustic jazz quintet. His arrangements are fascinating, full of propulsive riffs, imaginative ensemble playing and freewheeling improvisations. They capture the essence and the adventurous spirit of the original tracks while taking them in intriguing new directions. ‘Kid A’ opens with a halting, piano echo of the original synth figure, like a wonky music box, that gives way to mellow saxophones and a throaty baritone solo before becoming increasingly wild and free. ‘How To Disappear Completely’ is gorgeous, with lilting piano and an emotive sax melody haunted by hovering strings. And ‘Idioteque’ is a highlight, with rippling cross rhythms and another free-up before an urgent groove muscles in. I knew Simpson was a gifted player – here he adds Cecil Taylor-ish scribbles to ‘Everything In Its Right Place’ and effortless, bluesy phrases to ‘In Limbo’ – but it's his writing that really stands out. Kid A Revisited takes you through so many moods and emotions. Like the original, it's a brilliant mix of focussed energy and wild imagination.
