Cope curates The Jazz Podcast and many of the values exhibited therein shine on this debut: generous dialogue, good humour, a willingness to listen and a sheer enthusiasm for the music. Gemini is aptly monickered as much of the music is twinned with mentor, pal and teacher Andy Scott, who in turn has spent decades playing alongside the well-seasoned Noble and Clarvis.

This sense of communication across generations is wrapped up in the closing song of that name, with Noble close to the vein of his collaboration with Cathy Jordan (and Clarvis) on 'Freight Train': he and Clarvis stroll on, a little tipsily, until joined by Cope and Scott in easeful companionship. They pick up the affable theme from the opening ‘Voices’ and play out with no little joy. No horses will have been scared in the dozen vignettes that complete Gemini, but Cope writes and plays often complex tunes with a fleet fingered grace which is a gift to appreciate. And it’s always a pleasure to hear the unsung bass clarinet to the fore. A band to look out for in 2024.
