Steve's usual band One For All hasn't made a record for a couple of years, but this is very much the same sort of music he'd contribute to their book, though the three-piece frontline now has alto (DiRubbo) instead of tenor (Eric Alexander). While the opening 12-bar ‘Village Blues’ is a Coltrane classic, all the other tunes bar Bobby Hebb's ‘Sunny’ are Davis originals, all extremely tasteful. Davis’ own sound is as round and warm as ever, in the tradition of Curtis Fuller perhaps rather than JJ Johnson. Bruneau sounds like another Harrt School graduate, providing good competent solos, but lacking that extra something that OFA's Joe Magnarelli usually comes up with. The most exciting soloist is the underrated DiRubbo, who excels especially when the mood is blue. It's nice to hear Larry Willis on a session again (he recently recorded a solo album for HighNote). His solos sound so fresh and his comping is always a stimulant to any soloist, locking in with Reeves and Williams. Nothing new, but all in the best possible taste.
