Originally released as Super Secret Sound in 1997 as an extremely limited lathe LP, this meeting between former Albert Ayler drummer Sunny Murray and fellow Philadelphia based musicians Bob Dickie and Robert Andreano is now made more readily available for those who just might have missed it first time round. Homework sounds very much like a labour of love, where Murray has been hired and corralled into Andreano's home studio to record a session that is part free-jazz workout and part fanboy musical dream realised. That it works so alarmingly well comes as a pleasant surprise, with Murray in fine form as he effortlessly jams along with Dickie's weaving bass patterns and Andreano's bouts of Hendrix-meets-Sharrock styled fluid guitar-playing. It's not the greatest example of Murray's might as one of the 20th century's finest drummers, but it certainly isn't his worse recorded moment – and the intimate vibe that permeates the set is both endearing and, after several replays, teetering on the edge of becoming enduring.
