Tracey needs no introduction here: among his many strengths is his eye for new talent. This time it’s the vocals of 20-year-old Guildhall student Emily Masser. Masser makes her mark immediately skydiving into a hard swinging vocalisation on the opening ‘A Bitta Bittadose’. She hits the highs easefully, but equally when the tempos taken down her scat is rich, timely and never without a smile. Tracey of course is very at home in this Art Blakey bop mode and provides the perfect backdrop for Masser to fly.
The same goes for a stand-out ‘The Man I Love’, wittily arranged and with Masser happily unabashed to take her own route through a classic covered by all the greats. Masser has something of Annie Ross’ articulation, and if she hasn’t yet got the emotional gravitas for the likes of ‘Then I’ll Be Tired of You’, these are yet early days.
Masser is not the only bright young thing on display: Clarke’s sax is fluid and fluent throughout, singing on the swinging ‘So Near, So Far’ or joyously twinning Masser on ‘Suddenly Last Tuesday’. The future’s in good hands, thanks to the safe ones of Tracey.
