The generations Quartet is a well-integrated band since it comprises Liebman with three generations of jazz musicians he has mentored and presented in various of his groups at various stages in their careers. This is the first recording on which they have all played together, having performed previously a series of gigs at the Deer Head Inn, at Poconos, Pennsylvania. On this, their debut album together they revisit the American Songbook along with compositions from John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock. On the opening track, ‘Maiden Voyage’, Liebman sets the tone with a probing solo that pushes into the upper reaches of his soprano. The band may have been mentored by Liebman, but they don't hold back, pushing him with the kind of support that brings the best out of him. ‘Round About Midnight’, ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ and ‘On Green Dolphin Street’ all get a powerful reworking that push at the boundaries of each tune bending at the will of the improvisor into new shapes to the point they almost seem to fracture. They don't. “Speak Low”, Village Blues and ‘You and the Night and the Music’ demonstrate that even on familiar material, creative jazz musicians can make a powerful statement.
